Perhaps you saw those guys debating on most every TV network earlier this week. You can’t escape them: No two people are making more news these days than Barack Obama and John McCain, the twosome locked in battle for the upcoming presidential election. Now, both Obama and McCain are invading our comic book shelves. IDW’s Presidential Material series comes out today, with separate issues for the Democratic senator from Illinois and the Republican senator from Arizona. We went to our resident comic geek, Brian Truitt, to peruse the issues and see what he thought. Click read more below for his report and a few sample pages from the comics.
They seriously should be handing these issues out at rallies (although I doubt there’s money set aside for free comics in the candidates’ campaign budgets). Both Presidential Material books offer nonpartisan biographies of each candidate, from high points such as Obama’s rousing speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention that made him a “rock star” to low points such as McCain’s time as a POW in Vietnam. (Each one also looks ultra-heroic on their covers, thanks to Danger Girl artist J. Scott Campbell.) Every part of their lives are dealt with — Obama’s multicultural upbringing and stint as a community organizer, McCain’s maverick tendencies in politics and his marriage to wife, Cindy — with a fair eye, and every bit is interesting, whether you’re pro-Obama or a McCain lover. That blend of objective reporting and stories drawn from each man’s books and national news sources makes these essentially CliffsNotes for any voter this November.
And if you’re a comics fan in California, you might be interested in going to book signings by the two authors, Jeff Mariotte (Obama) and Andy Helfer (McCain). They will be at Golden Apple Comics in L.A. from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and at Comics Unlimited in Westminster from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.
