Mel Gibson's now saying that an on-air insult this week that appeared to be aimed at a Chicago reporter, was meant for his publicist.

In a text message to KTLA's Sam Rubin Wednesday, Gibson said his publicist was making faces at him off-camera, and the actor didn't realize he was still on air when he called him a (jerk).
