Scottish-American actor John Barrowman says there’s a lot of himself in Captain Jack Harkness, the time-traveling sci-fi hero he plays on the series Torchwood: Miracle Day, which makes its debut on Starz Friday night. There’s a lot of the character, too, in Barrowman’s little Jack Russell Terrier — fittingly named Captain Jack. “He’s as charismatic and lovable as Captain Jack,” says Barrowman, 44, who splits his time between California and London. . . . Peter Cullen, 66, has been the popular voice of Optimus Prime in Transformers cartoons, video games and now in the film Transformers: Dark of the Moon. He always based the robot’s earnest tones on his brother Larry, a decorated Marine captain who fought in the Vietnam War. He died this year. “Every time I think of Optimus Prime, it just rings of Larry,” Cullen says. “There are people who can go through life wondering if they made a difference, and Larry as a Marine and his brothers like him never have to worry about that.”
