Q: Could you please tell me something about Anthony LaPaglia?

March 11th, 2011 No comments

Sandra Goodwin, Ellsworth, Maine

LaPaglia, an Aussie, has tailored his accent for roles since his arrival in the States in 1982. “When I moved here, it wasn’t particularly fashionable to be an Australian actor,” says LaPaglia, 52, who won a Tony in 1998 for A View From the Bridge, an Emmy for guest-starring on Frasier and a Golden Globe for his work on Without a Trace. “I was always a great believer in ‘When in Rome . . . adapt,’ ” he says.

After LaPaglia’s seven years on CBS’ Trace, pal Stanley Tucci invited him back to Broadway in last year’s revival of Lend Me a Tenor. “It was too hard to resist,” says the star, who lives in Santa Monica, Calif., with actress wife Gia Carides and their daughter Bridget, 8. Now he’s adapting View From the Bridge into a movie. “I’ve been in love with this play since I was an acting student in my 20s,” says LaPaglia, who is producing.

Q: I enjoyed watching Byron Pitts on ’60 Minutes.’ What happened to him?

February 18th, 2011 No comments

Gloria Douglas, Gary, Ind.

Pitts hasn’t gone anywhere! He’s still a contributor for 60 Minutes—he started off the new year with a piece on the violent drug war in Mexico. Before that, in November, he reported a story about Haiti. But it’s Pitts’ job as chief national correspondent for the CBS Evening News With Katie Couric that “keeps him quite busy,” a CBS spokesman says. Pitts, 50, won an Emmy Award for his CBS News coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

NBC's '30 Rock,' AMC's 'Mad Men' lead 2009 Emmy nominations

July 16th, 2009 No comments

NUP_109306_0432 It’s going to be a good day for both Tina Fey (at right) and Jon Hamm. The NBC comedy 30 Rock leads all shows going into this year’s Emmy Awards with 22 nominations, announced this morning, and AMC’s Mad Men, which became the first basic cable show to win an Emmy Award for best drama series last year, looks poised to clean up again this year with 16 nominations. The possible Emmy nominee list was expanded to six in all the major categories in 2009, and Mad Men will compete against Breaking Bad, Big Love, Lost, Dexter, Damages and House for best drama series. Mad Men‘s Hamm joins Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Hugh Laurie (House), Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment), Simon Baker (The Mentalist) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter) in the lead actor in a drama series category. Hamm was also nominated in the guest actor in a comedy series category for his stint as Fey’s love interest on 30 Rock, which had a great morning as well. The NBC sitcom will go up against Entourage, Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, Flight of the Conchords and Weeds for outstanding comedy series, and its star, Fey, was nominated for best actress in a comedy series alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine), Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?), Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program), Toni Collette (The United States of Tara) and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds). For a list of all the nominations, click here. How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris, who was nominated as an outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series, will host the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards, airing on CBS, on Sept. 20.

'Harry Potter', Emmys on week's agenda

July 13th, 2009 No comments

It’s a mid-summer Monday and on my mind today I have:
Entourage. It’s back (on HBO) and it’s good, though I’m not wild about the Gary Cole character; would rather see more Debi Mazar.
Johnny Depp. I saw Public Enemies Saturday. Liked the movie, loved Johnny. It’s still  No. 4 at the box office. Bruno was No. 1.
Rescue Me. My piece on Denis Leary ran in the magazine a couple of weeks ago but today I interview Larenz Tate,
who plays Black Shawn on the FX drama. It’s been  a
wild season to date so I’m interested in what Tate has to sa10481121H26375703y about  it.
Harry Potter. The sixth movie, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, opens Wednesday so I sent intern Steve Thompson, who has read the books and seen all the previous movies, to an early screening today.  Come back this afternoon for his report.
The Emmys: Nominations for the PrimeTime Emmy Awards will be announced Thursday. As I suggested after Neil Patrick Harris‘ successful night of hosting the Tony Awards, CBS is planning to use him to host the Emmys. And let’s hope for  fresh faces    — anybody from the cast of Friday Night Lights for exampleamong the usual Tina Fey, Hugh Laurie, Steve Carell, etc.
